A recommended reading list

Poisoned Pen is a well-known -- one might even say famous -- book store that specializes in mysteries, thrillers and spy stories.

I won't copy the list here because it's their copyright, but it's only a click away and will open in a separate window.  They have it sorted by category, type and period.  As it happens, I am <ahem> on the list in the Greek/Roman section.

Casting aside what few dregs of modesty I possess, I'm going to suggest that this is a really, really good list.  I haven't read everyone on it, but I've read well more than half, and these are quality writers, even if you ignore yours truly.  If you read everyone on this list, you'd come away with a very extensive and a very broad knowledge of the genre.

I was really quite impressed.

No Dorothy L. Sayers? I can't see the rationale of including Agatha Christie but not Dorothy L. Sayers.

Thanks for linking to this list, Gary. My To-Be-Read list overfloweth. :)

I confess Dorothy Sayers wouldn't be on any list I wrote, either. Lord Peter Wimsey is a somewhat polarising character.

If it's any consolation, I don't think they intend it as a comprehensive list, so much as a way to see a substantial amount of everything.

Hi Colin, yes. And if you consider that each line on that page is at least one entire series, it would take a couple of years to get through them all.

Though I guess for most people, they'll not warm to at least half the authors, purely as a matter of taste, which would save time. Like Robert's excellent point about Sayers; if she were there, some would love her and some not.

Congratulations, Gary! Hope it results in such a spike that reprintings are necessary for both books!

Thanks!

Funny you should mention the reprint thing. Stay tuned for some news on that.
