Gary buys books

The local Borders is having a sale. Every book $5. So I bought a few.

Since the books are remaindered, I believe the authors don't receive royalties. Apologies to Lee Child, Megan Abbott, Jeffrey Deaver et al. I'll buy you a coffee at the next Bouchercon to compensate.

Hey that's like buying a TBR list in one go.

Hi Sean,

Yep, that's pretty much what happened. I was restricted to what Borders wanted to dump, but the fools have remaindered some top quality authors. Check out the Ruth Downie, the Jason Goodwin, the Fred Vargas.

Check out your nearest Borders; I think th sale might be Australia-wide.

Wow. That's quite a pile. Happy reading!

I wonder if I would still come out ahead after airfare. Hmmmmmmmm.

And, dang, now that I'm serious about becoming a professional and getting close to querying, etc., I have started to feel really guilty about buying used and remaindered books. lol

That's a fantastic picture.

BTW I started TPC. Really loving the writing style so far! :D

AWESOME. Love it. Wish they were doing that here!

It's the time of year where I start stocking up on books-- but not for me. I give a lot of books away as Christmas presents. Don't worry-- TPC is on that list! :D

Wow, somebody else who's actually heard of, let alone read, Fred Vargas. I thought I was the only one. I probably AM the only one in Jakarta, apart from those I've insisted must read her.

The Amber Spyglass! I read that for the first time when I was a teenager and I think my jaw was on the floor the entire time. It's gorgeous.

The wife would kill me, its about 2 hrs drive for me :) $50 fuel + books

Linda, yes that lot should keep me busy for a few weeks. I find I read less when I'm editing, as I am now, so maybe as much as 2 to 3 months?

I'm with you Nevets. I never gave a moment's thought to how authors made their money, until I was on the receiving end. Now I know in depressing detail.

Julie, The Amber Spyglass might turn into a present. We already have a copy, but I couldn't pass up such a lovely hardcover.

Hi Robert,

I suspect Vargas is an acquired taste, if only because there just aren't that many women who call themselves Fred.

And her hero Adamsberg is somewhat Gallic.

Vargas is very well known indeed among crime afficionados. She's won a record 3 International Daggers from the Crime Writer's Association.

Sean, yep, I guess the $50 overhead is a killer. You must be out in the country somewhere.

Hi Meghan, glad you like Pericles Commission(so far, anyway...). Yes, the colloquial voice and the historical detail makes for a fun combination to write.

Hi L.T.

Thanks :-)

Say hi to the capybaras for me. Or better yet, give them a hug.

West of Snowtown :)

OK, that's a trifle out of the way. Perfect place to enjoy the countryside though!

I haven't read the Adamsberg novels, only The Three Evangelists, which I thought was wonderful. What's not to like in a story about 3 historians living together, each of whose lifestyle reflects his period of interest, and their investigation of the disappearance of a reclusive Greek opera singer in Paris?

I haven't read The Three Evangelists. Now I must.

Hi Gary,
No apologies necessary - it's nice to see 'Ruso and the Disappearing Dancing Girls' in the company of John le Carre and Elmore Leonard!

Hi Ruth!

I owe you a coffee too. (Now I'm feeling guilty...)

May I say, I love Ruso's adventures!
