I hope you'll allow me a brief moment of pride. It's traditional to ask other, better-known authors who write in a similar vein if they'd care to comment about one's forthcoming book. The requests are typically made by the editor, not the author, and those interested receive an Advance Reader Copy. Receiving an ARC is no obligation to blurb the book; that's only done if the reader is so inclined.
Here are the blurbs that will appear on the back cover of The Pericles Commission. The words are a delight to this debut author, but it's the names attached to the words which make me puff
out
my chest.
“The Pericles Commission is a rollicking romp through ancient Athens, with captivating characters and engrossing, suspense-filled turns as twisty as the Attic streets. Debut author Gary Corby has not only made Greek history accessible—he’s made it first-rate entertainment.”
—Kelli Stanley, award-winning author of Nox Dormienda and City of Dragons
“Gary Corby’s ambitious series debut delivers an unexpected dividend—a lively sense of humor which leavens the weighty subject matter: the messy birth of democracy in Athens, attended by riot, revenge, and, of course, murder.”
—Steven Saylor, international bestselling author of Roma
“The Pericles Commission is a most original and enjoyable interpretation of classical Athens. Corby vividly and lucidly describes the intricacies of the city . . . in this exciting saga of flesh-and-blood characters who jostle and fight, love and hate as they approach the climax of murderous intrigue.”
—P. C. Doherty

Congratulations, Gary! This is some high praise!!
Awesome! You must be dancing with pride! :-)
Outstanding! Often a good blurb from a respected author will tip the scale toward purchase if I'm undecided about a book and I'm guessing I'm not alone on this. Yay for a boost in sales!
Hey, Gary, two thumbs up for you here!
Way to go, Gary! Congratulations!
It's almost here, are you excited? Also, any more info on your book tour as far as places/dates?
Gary, you can be justly proud! Congratulations and well done.
I meant to ask, is there a release date for here in Australia?
Thank you very much, everyone!
Wow. Well done, Gary.
Congratulations, Gary! Is it October 12th yet? I'm dying to read it.
Hi Julie. Only 4 weeks to go. Which is sort of scary in a way. But also the end of a long, long effort. The first version of this story I began in October 2004. It'll be almost exactly 6 years when the book goes on sale.
Woops, forgot to reply to your question, Peter:
Pericles Commission releases in Australia some time in January.
I don't have an official date from Penguin, but I was in my local Borders the other day, and out of morbid curiousity looked up my own book in their online catalogue. Pericles Commission is already listed with an on sale date of 4th January. That might be a random furfy though.
Well-earned pride, Gary. :) Congratulations on such a stellar array!
I am so excited for you. Congratulations!!
Next year, authors will be coming to you for such blurbs. Imagine how it'll make you feel when you read things such as 'Wow, you got a quote from Gary Corby. Awesome.' Well done. Your pride's totally justified.
Those are some awesome quotes! I of course haven't read the book yet but based on your blog alone I completely agree with them. :)
Thanks Leonie and Nevets!
Bill, that idea is too weird for words. I'd feel like the blind leading the sighted.
Thanks Lessa! I guess I just have to hope the blog sounds like the book (which in fact, in terms of voice, it does).
