Songs of antiquity

I think this deserves a new post. The comments on forthcoming titles has devolved (elevated?) into some punny song titles. I want to particularly point out:

Like A Rolling Stone. Duet sung by Bob Dylan and Sisyphus. Courtesy of Loretta.

Get Bacchae (to Where You Once Belonged). Courtesy of Peter Rozovsky. I note in passing this song includes a mention of a Loretta.

You Can Call Me Alcestis. Sung as a duet by Paul Simon and Peter Rozovsky.

My own inadequate contribution are these lyrics, to the tune of Rust Never Sleeps:

Hey, hey,
My, my,
Prometheus will never die,
It's better in Hades,
Than chained to a rock,
With your liver exposed,
To a ravenous flock.

To which Peter adds:

Liver And Let Die.

Any others?

Too fab Gary. Alas, I have no further contributions. You are the master of your realm.

Peter and Loretta own the great titles. Not me! I just felt they deserved a wider audience.

Hoping that the ghosts of John Lennon and George Harrison can forgive me:

Lady Echidna

monsters at your feet.

Don't want to think about what they eat.

Lernaean Hydra,

coiled at your breast,

wonders how you manage to feed the rest!

Heracles arrives without a suitcase.

Beware Argos, creeping like a nun.

Send Cerberus down to guard the hot place.

See how folks run!

You have a talent for this Loretta!

Oh, my goodness--so awesome! I wish I had the mind tonight to add a contribution. But sadly, no. I can only enjoy the ones you've posted...

Down Among The Dead Men. Covered by a band I've just invented called Achilles.

"Blinded by the light" A cautionary tune about flying too close to the sun, by a new artist called Icarus. Chorus by Daedalus

Manius Aquillius' smash hits included "Gold", and "Money, Money, Money", as well as "Hard to swallow".

I could have hours of fun with this idea ;)

ROFL!

Poor Prometheus. I think Jason and the Golden Fleece could make a good band name too. You could have some of Zeus's conquests as back-up singers too- Io, Europa, and the whole lot.

Gary Corby said...

Kosmos, please have your hours of fun, because those are brilliant. OMG, I'm still laughing at Hard To Swallow.

Gary Corby said...

Kosmos just inspired me with another one for her new artist Icarus...

Learning To Fly (Pink Flord cover)

Gary Corby said...

Stephanie, they could call themselves the Zeussettes. But, wouldn't there be a lot of catfighting amongst the singers?

Another one for Sisyphus: Still Rock and Roll to Me (Billy Joel song)

Don't Cry For Me Macedonia by Alexander and the Greats

I Want A Girl Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad by Oedipus

Gary Corby said...

I didn't believe there was such a song as I Want A Girl Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad.

That is beyond inspired, Loretta.

Another one for Sisyphus:

Let Me Roll It (Paul McCartney and Wings)

Zeus' song, "You're so vain" ?

Caesar after Gaul, "We are the champions", followed by "Many rivers to cross" ultimately leading to, "The first cut is the deepest".

Cleopatra sang "He's so fine" to capture Caesar's attention, shortly followed by "Love Child", "My Boyfriend's back", "You keep me hanging on", moving onto "All night long", once Marc Antony was on the scene, with "Nowhere to run" following rapidly up the charts. Their encore duet of "Endless Love" was apparently spectacularly defiant in the eyes of Augustus Caesar. She must have been a Motown fan ;)

must drag self away from puter for a while ..... lol

Kosmos, Loretta and Peter need to form a band. I will totally come to your shows.

Loretta Ross said...

I've Got Sunshine by Apollo and Here Comes The Sun and I'll Follow The Sun by his backup singers, The Pythias.

I Wanna Be Free by Prometheus.

Rock You Like A Hurricane by Poseidon.

Gary Corby said...

Venus by Venus. Alright, it's too obvious for words.

Then there's Walk Like An Egyptian which surely must be sung as a duet by Hatshepsut and Stephanie Thornton.

I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair by Medusa.

Gary Corby said...

Chariots Of Fire by Apollo.

Gary Corby said...

Kosmos, I think you may have arranged the entire score for Cleopatra: The Musical.

Gary, didn't someone make a tweet about trepannation on your Twitter account? How about that Beatles song "Fixing a Hole"?

Since I Fell For You by Icarus.

Hair by Medusa of course.

As Time Goes By by Chronus.

Hello Goodbye by Janus.

When I'm Not With The One I Love, I Love The One I'm With by Zeus.

This is fun but it's one in the morning and I have to work tomorrow. Sigh. Night all.

Goodnight Loretta! I'll bet you dream of song titles.

Peter Rozovsky said...

How about the opposite of a George Harrison song -- Daedalus and Icarus singing "There Goes the Son"?

Oh, wait: Elton John's "Saturday Night's All Right for Phaëtōn."

Now, goodnight.

The B52's have some suitable tracks. There's 'Hero Worship' from the debut album, or '53 Miles West of Venus' from Wild Planet. And of course there's their tribute to the Eternal City on Cosmic Thing ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyj6t-5THic

Gary Corby said...

"Saturday Night's All Right for Phaëtōn" Peter, you're wasted in editing. Why aren't you writing comedy?

Gary Corby said...

Hi Alun! Welcome to the general silliness.

Yes, Roam (Rome) is perfect.

Since we're on the subject of the B52s, how can we not mention...

Mesopotamia

heeheehee excellent exercise.

Loretta's "Dear Old Dad" really got me there.

Loretta Ross said...

I'll bet you dream of song titles.

I'm blaming you for the fact that I woke up this morning with this stuck in my head:

(To the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic)

Ooooooooh
my! Have you read the story
of the mating of the gods?
There was Zeus and all his girlfriends.
It was really pretty odd!
Seems the big guy like to bonk things
that were hooved and furred and clawed
When all roads led to Rome!

Ooooooooh!
He fell in love with Io and
I swear she was a cow!
It seems that there was nothing
his mores would not allow.
Then they called him "an Olympian"
We'd call him "redneck" now!
And all roads lead to Rome!

Weeeellll,
In his pursuit of Romance, Zeus was always very bold
He made love to Princess Danae as a shining shower of gold
Though I always wondered how the hell
The story never told
And all roads lead to Rome!

Soooooo,
I guess that in the old days
they were not afraid of sin.
Get caught making love to Fido?
Say, "the gods tricked me again!"
They loved wine and song and sex and
bestiality was in
When all roads led to Rome!

In that case, I invoke the Fifth Dimension's "Wedding Bell Blues" for a musical version of Ishtar's advances to the hero in "The Epic of Gilgamesh" -- with one minor consonant change:

"Gil, I love you so, I always will."

Loretta, I never realized I was so inspirational. You should put some of yours on your own blog.

I don't suppose you'd like to post an audio of you singing this?

Loretta Ross said...

Gary, are you inspirational? I thought you were a bad influence. :D I can post some of them on my own blog. Didn't mean to inundate yours! This has been fun. As to posting an audio version, you're a brave man. If I can figure out how, I will though. ;)

Gary Corby said...

Loretta, please saturate my blog with your amazing lyrics for the rest of eternity if you wish! I merely thought it was unfair I was getting all the benefit of your genius.

Loretta Ross said...

You're awfully sweet! I've posted the lyrics on my blog and added a couple of titles I thought up at work today. (You know, I tried explaining what fun we were having on your blog to some of my co-workers but most of them just gave me that "aren't you supposed to be on medications?" look. *G*

I've made a .wav file of the Zeus song, but I haven't any idea how to post it! It's about a minute and a half, I think. My blog has a button for posting video, but none for audio! Any suggestions?

Gary Corby said...

Ignore those doubters; they don't understand our creative silliness.

Blogger can't host audio natively. But you can either put the file on your normal web site and then use a widget to link to it, or, and this is probably easier, use movie maker to turn it into a video slideshow with one nice picture and host it on youtube, after which it's easy to link to from blogger.

If you like, email it to me and I'll make it a slideshow.

BAD PUNS!

"Don't tell me no lies and keep your hands to yourself (or I'll turn you into a deer)" by Artemis?

An "I'm on fire" version with Zeus and Athena?

Sometimes it's like someone took a knife baby/
Edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley/
Through the middle of my skull..."

Loretta Ross said...

If you like, email it to me and I'll make it a slideshow.

Are you sure it wouldn't be a bother? I'm a technical idiot. I have one song on my website. It took me two weeks to figure out how to get it there and now I don't remember what I did!

Gary Corby said...

Happy to do it, Loretta. Mail it on through!

Very good Carrie! Welcome to the silliness. :-)

Actually, a musical of Cleopatra's life might just be an interesting success. Her life was surely even more eventful than Eva Peron's :P

What's Andrew Lloyd Webber's email addy again ? lol

I am in awe of Loretta's abilities however and am awaiting the audio version with interest :)

Linkmeister said...

Okay, this is Peter's fault.

"Almost Cut My Hair," Samson.

"Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," Ulysses to Penelope before heading out to Troy.

"Bathsheba Smiles," Uriah.

"Love Has No Pride," Mary Magdalene (if you trust Andrew Lloyd Webber's or Dan Brown's version of history).

Peter Rozovsky said...

Thumbs up on Samson!

I'm with Peter, Linkmeister, the Samson one is very cool.

Kosmos, there's a first draft of Loretta singing her song up on youtube. It's only a first draft though.

Linkmeister said...

Nobody is ever gonna mistake David Crosby for Samson, though.

Gary Corby said...

It does seem unlikely, though his hair is sort of right for it.
