Songs for Mystery Writers

Romance writers get a zillion love songs but how many people write songs for mysteries? Even SF gets more.

The only mystery songs I can think of are:

Watching The Detectives by Elvis Costello

Who Are You by The Who, had nothing to do with mysteries when it was written. CSI fixed that.

Paperback Writer by Paul McCartney is relevant. I love the way it reads as a query letter. The story goes McCartney wrote the song after his aunt complained he only wrote love songs. You know you're overdoing it when even your aunt starts complaining your lyrics are too soppy.

This list is too short. Can anyone help me here?

I don't know how many people have written songs for mysteries, but a whole lot of people have written song that could have been written mysteries and other crime stories. Long Black Veil comes to mind.

Music and crime fiction has been a popular subject on my blog, especially when the discussion turns to songs that would make good crime stories. You can find my music posts here, if you'd care to take a look.

Comes to mind. =)

I'm not an expert but the more I hear about - and hear - rappers, the more it seems as if their entire output is redressing the balance between mystery/crime songs and love songs.

Oh, we should put together a playlist!

This is tougher than I originally thought. First thing that comes to mind is Secret Agent Man...I mean, it's not exactly a mystery, but most espionage books have mysterious elements.
I think there's an argument for Bohemian Rhapsody. Yes, the song tells the whole story, but think of it like a synopsis...

Great suggestions!

Yes, the music Holmes played should count. Secret Agent Man, Red Right Hand and Bohemian Rhapsody for sure.

I'm afraid rappers can't count Bill on the grounds they don't produce music.

I rather like Barrie's idea of a playlist. Not sure how easy that would be to do. A lot of those personal internet music sites refuse to work for grotty Australians.

Nice, pointed comment about rappers. I can't bring myself to disagree with it.
